Fire Extinguishers come in many different types and sizes. Before purchasing a fire extinguisher, make sure that it will put out the types of fires it is going to be located in. There are four basic types of extinguishers. A B C D.
Type A Extinguishers - Solid fuels such as wood, paper, and plastic.
Type B Extinguishers - Flammable liquids such as grease, oil, and gasoline.
Type C Extinguishers - Energized Electrical fires such as extension cords, televisions, toasters. Once the item is unplugged, it than becomes a class A fire because it is no longer energized.
Type D Extinguishers - Special Metals that are very flammable, such as Magnesium. Class D is more common in industry settings.
Fire Extinguishers should be checked every 30 days. This can be done by a visual inspection of the gauge located on the extinguisher. The needle of the gauge should read in the green, or good position of the gauge, if it is over or under that mark, the extinguisher should be discarded.
