Smoke Alarms

Here are some more tips on how to place, use, and maintain smoke alarms.

  • Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling, or 6 to 8 inches below the ceiling level on a side wall.
  • Smoke alarms usually last from 8 to 10 years. With any electrical device, they should be tested, and as always, adhere to manufacturers specifications for replacement and testing.
  • Smoke alarms should be placed:
    • On every level, including the basement
    • Outisde of bedrooms, and inside for extra security
    • In all hallways
  • Many fatal fires begin in the night or early morning when no one is awake to catch them before they spread. The use of smoke alarms in the home reduces the risk of dying by 50 percent
